The Domaine du Paternel also has a cellar-worthy red wine on offer from the Bandol appellation. After being aged for 18 months in wooden tuns and barrels, this wine may be enjoyed young, when its notes of ripe red berries are a notable feature. With time, it will develop structural complexity, fullness and notes of spice.
ORIGINS
The Rouge Grande Réserve is a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. The Mourvèdre grapes provide structure and complexity while the Grenache gives the wine its red berry aromas. These grapes come from our vines cultivated in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Le Castellet.
Terroir
The Bandol AOC land mainly features hillside plots, where the vines sit on arid marl and limestone soil. Close pruning, as well as a green harvest in early July, make it possible to obtain the very small batches indispensable for crafting this wine.
In the winery, after two weeks of vatting in rotator barrels, the grapes are pressed. The wine will then spend 18 months in large and small barrels, over which time its aromas will develop complexity.

Nose
Very elegant, with ripe fruit and black cherry aromas.
Palate
The Rouge Grande Réserve will display prominent small red berry flavors. It can be cellared for around ten years. After a few years of cellaring, it will have developed aromatic complexity with notes of spice, ripe red berries, fine tannins and a lovely persistence on the palate.

As a young wine, it pairs well with red meat grilled medium or rare, like prime rib.
